1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how your information is handled when you use the Reg Check app.
The app is published under the name Bits of Bytes, which is used for independent software projects maintained by an individual based in the United Kingdom.
2. What Data We Collect
The Reg Check app does not collect or store any personal data.
When you enter a UK vehicle registration number, the app sends your request to a secure cloud-based proxy server, which forwards it to the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry API. The returned data contains publicly available vehicle information and is not linked to your identity or device.
3. Search History
The app stores a history of your previous vehicle lookups locally on your device to improve convenience. This feature is enabled by default, but you can clear your history at any time in the app settings.
No search history or usage data is transmitted to the developer or any third party. Each stored entry includes only the registration number and a “favourite” status, if set.
4. Use of Cloud Services
All DVLA lookups are routed through a cloud function hosted on Firebase (a service provided by Google). This proxy server is used to authenticate and manage communication with the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry API.
Firebase may log technical data such as IP addresses, timestamps, and request headers solely for security and diagnostic purposes. This data is not accessed by the developer and is handled according to Google's Privacy Policy.
For operational monitoring, the proxy may log a hashed version of the registration number (using SHA-256) to help track usage patterns and detect abuse. This hash is irreversible and cannot be linked back to individuals or devices.
5. Third-Party Services
This app uses the UK DVLA's Vehicle Enquiry API, which provides data under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
6. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Know what data the app handles (none of it is personally identifiable)
- Delete your search history at any time from within the app
- Request more information about the app's data handling
7. Children's Privacy
The app does not target children specifically, but it is suitable for users of all ages. No personal data is collected from any users, including minors.
8. Future Changes
If the app begins using analytics or any new services that involve user data, this Privacy Policy will be updated accordingly and reflected in the latest app version.
